Living Through the Chaos

I remember the chaos vividly: slammed doors, harsh words, rules ignored, and blame shifted onto me. Our home often felt like walking a tightrope, balancing love, discipline, and safety. Some days were overwhelming and heartbreaking. Perhaps you’ve been there before or are there now. These tough years won’t last forever. Stay steady in your rules and expectations—your consistency is a powerful gift that creates security, trust, and accountability in your home. Even on the hardest days, what you’re building truly matters.

Teenage Challenges Intensify

Rules about dating, social media, and personal boundaries are sometimes ignored. Teens may bring boyfriends/girlfriends over unannounced or hide inappropriate interactions online. My priority has always been the safety and well-being of every child, especially younger or more vulnerable children in our home. While we could not fix the trauma that occurred before our adoptive daughters entered our home, we did everything we could to protect them from further harm and give them a safe, normal childhood to the best of our abilities. Firm boundaries were never meant to be punitive; but to be protective.

Parenting Under Stress

Parenting under stress is exhausting. Loss of sleep, anxiety, and uncertainty can feel constant. Sometimes, even those we turn to for guidance can escalate the problem. Eventually, we realized our one daughter needed a different environment to heal. For seven years, we tried every parenting strategy, different counseling services (in and out of our home), and listened to professional advice but our house was still full of turmoil. Safety and well-being must come first. Protecting not just our challenged teen but also the other children in the home required difficult decisions. But God....He never failed us or left us alone! During those years, I found comfort in God's Word and relief through prayer. If you are facing trials today I strongly encourage you to open up the Bible to Psalms, these chapters will bring comfort and hope to your aching heart knowing that God sees you, hears you and loves you and your family!

Learning to Let Go

Over the years, I learned I cannot control someone else’s choices or fix what they refuse to take responsibility for. Stepping back, assessing circumstances, and seeking professional guidance are essential. Safeguarding your children and your own well-being allows you to serve all the children depending on you.

Boundaries Are Acts of Love

Parenting under stress is never perfect. I made plenty of mistakes. But keeping children safe and enforcing rules is never optional. Healthy boundaries are an act of love, for both your family and yourself. One painful but clarifying moment came when one of my adoptive daughters was readopted as an adult by someone else. It reminded me that some responsibilities are not ours to carry forever. And that's okay. Sometimes, God removes weights we were never meant to bear and uses our experiences for a greater purpose.

Walking Alongside Others

These challenges prepared me to walk alongside other families, pray with them, and encourage teens searching for hope. True healing only comes through Jesus. Love does not mean tolerating chaos, and grace does not require sacrificing your well-being. Setting boundaries, holding firm, and stepping away from manipulation are acts of strength, not failure.

Helping Teens Become Overcomers

Parenting this way is messy and challenging, but the lessons you learn, the lives you protect, and the boundaries you maintain are powerful acts of love. Helping your teen adopt the mindset of becoming an Overcomer instead of a Forever Victim is one of the greatest gifts you can give, guided by faith and hope.

James 1: 2 - 5

"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."
